All wood takes stain differently, especially birch. Color variation is normal for this product.
Does it come in "natural" - I've seen some photos of it not stained? Although we don't offer the displays in natural, we are open to special orders with only a polyurethane coat. Please email us!
Occasional voids in the plywood come repaired from the plywood factory. We make every effort to place these in minimally visible locations.
Some spacer blocks may have additional little holes, due to a (sorry for the pun) "shelved" idea dealing with a commercial/retail version of the product. They won't be seen after assembly.
Trust us, we tried a lot of colors and stain brands. We've chosen Varathane by Rustolium for this product line. In the end, four colors is just barely manageable with six build kits, making 24 variants, plus additional parts to stock!
As with all wood projects, any individual piece has character. We do try to minimize sending anything really weird, but life does happen. Each build kit is hand-made, and hand-packed, so each component has been handled numerous times before shipping. If you feel something is really wrong, we'd love to see a photo or description for quality control, and then we'll do our best to send you a replacement part.
We've built these shelving units with a certain amount of tolerances between holes in wood, and metal hardware. With thousands of parts and holes, something is bound to be a little off from time to time during production. So far, we've only encountered one issue we believe we've resolved, but here it is: If a bookend fork doesn't slide into position (by hand), a 1/4" drill bit (and drill) can be used to slightly bore-out the appropriate hole in the Fascia Block. Sorry if you got one of the remaining early prototypes! We'll try to send a replacement wood piece if that quick fix doesn't work.
Some small gaps in plywood pieces may appear. This is expected and does not affect the performance of the product. We try to minimize using pieces with gaps larger than shown above.
Some kits contain black 3" door hinge pins that connect the bookend forks to the shelf slab, or connect to the fascia block to hold vinyl record sets. Our supplier sometimes sends glossy, and sometimes matte. We try to keep these standard by-kit, but not across all kits.
